FINE ART DEGREE?

"Should I do a Fine Art Degree or something that will make me seem smart and get me loads of money, like a degree in medicine or law".- said every fine artist ever!
This question has been on my mind a lot lately. I start uni in September (7 months to go), but I'm still yet to decide whether to do something that I like (Fine Art) or do something that my parents and family and teachers and future employers prefer (Psychology/ Law). I love art but I'm not encouraged to study it at a higher level because it isn't seen as a "proper"/ "recognised" degree, even though for me, and probably all art students, it is the most challenging subject I have ever done. I have learnt so many valuable and transferable skills from GCSE and A'Level Art that I want to expand on..

Quote of the day- "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life".

  1. Such an interesting post, I think the stigma associated with arts degrees not being 'proper degrees' is so ridiculous and unfair. I think you should do a fine art degree, do what you enjoy and not worry about what other people think! Good luck with your decision!

  3. Being a graduate, I think it's extremely important to do something that you would personally enjoy doing as you're more likely to put in the effort during the completion of your course. I also think it's wise to ensure that your degree is something that can help you job wise later on. However, saying that a lot of jobs now do not necessarily look for a particular subject degree but a certain degree level (i.e. minimum 2:1 degree) and experience X

  6. Really good post, thought provoking and an issue that reaally matters. I personally was going to do an English and drama degree, but at the last minute chose law.. Although initially regretting it, 2 years in it's been a lot better than expected, but would definitely advise anyone to do something they truly want to, it's your life at the end of it! :)

    1. Thank you for your comment :) I'm still contemplating a bit on the idea to do something more "academic" but as you said, it's so important to do something you enjoy x
