THE FAULT IN OUR STARS: MOVIE VS BOOK

I first read the fault in our stars on New Years 2014. From that moment I was hooked!

I love the metaphors and symbols. For example the notorious cigarette metaphor. Putting the killing thing in your mouth but not awarding it the power to kill you. Which can symbolise Gus trying to take control of his health, and maybe even his life, which he feels he has no control over. Which is kinda true.

I love the cute quotes. e.g. "My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations." or the simple, yet meaningful. "Okay? Okay."

I love the underlying message that, no matter how short ones life is, it can still be beautiful and meaningful.

I even like that Gus dies instead of Hazel. I mean it was extremely upsetting and I literally felt like my life was over, but if Hazel died it wouldn't have been as shocking. The book begins with her being ill and encountering this charming dude who had cancer but doesn't anymore and as the reader, you assume that if anyone dies it will be Hazel. So you kinda prepare yourself for that. But when you start to realise that actually maybe Gus dies, you don't even have enough time to prepare yourself emotionally, which makes it more heartbreaking I guess. But, more interesting at the same time.

Does that make sense?

Anywho, I watched the movie on 12th June 2014. This was the fan screening in the UK. I went with my friend Jada to the Odeon cinema in Manchester.

Okay, to the movie....

My authentic thoughts on the movie are;

1.1 They (The writers of the script) missed indispensable events and people. for example, CAROLINE MATHERS! Caroline was Gus' ex girlfriend who passed away from cancer. I think she is significant as she was the motive (I think) for Gus gawking at Hazel in support group, in the literal heart of Jesus!

1.2 Also they missed out the part were Hazel commits the cardinal sin of social media and goes online to look at Caroline Mathers's Facebook. Hazel scrolls through endless messages of people announcing their anguish towards Caroline's death. This part is crucial (I believe) as Hazel notices that when Caroline passed, she left so many people feeling inconsolable. This makes us understand why she doesn't want to have a relationship with Gus. She describes herself as a grenade and she understands that one day she will blow up and she wants to minimize the casualties.

2.Shailene Woodley! 'Shailene Woodley’s transcendent, pure and authentic performance' in the movie left me speechless! I honestly love her as Hazel! The chemistry between ansel and Shailene throughout the movie is just perfect. They make the story and the characters come to life and make them seem so real.

3. Overall it was an incredible movie. There were parts that made me laugh uncontrollable then 10 minutes later I would be whimpering. I was on an emotional rollercoaster that went up and down, my friend. ^_^

I personally prefer the book over the movie as it tells the story more intricately. The book contains symbols and metaphors that gets the reader thinking. I also think that the movie is more based on Hazel and Augustus' relationship, and is more of a love story. Were as the book in my opinion is more about life and death.
